This was alright, all things considered.

I mean, the insta-love was extremely strong and extremely disgusting, but hey, there's a lot you have to sacrifice if you're going to put two separate romance arcs as well as an actual plot into a single novella.

Honestly, I think that this had the potential to be really good if there wasn't so much crammed into such a small amount. The romance(s ????) felt absolutely unnecessary but the plot was actually quite good. I think it was also mentioned in

Too bad the plotline only really started in the second half, because the first half was just one of the side characters from the second book mooning over more atrocious eye descriptions. What is it with mediocre YA fantasy book and their eye descriptions??? I suffer so much because of them.

Anyway, this was nice, and it definitely could have been better, but it's just a novella, so it's fine.

I'm glad this was a novella, because it really wasn't something I would've wanted to read much longer. Also, this is NOT a retelling. There is no sign of Snow White and Rose Red. While we can assume the two FMC's are the two girls, we only "know" that because the title declares that's the story. No other plot points arise and it feels a bit like false advertising. Not to mention it's a shame that tale is already "used" since it doesn't make it possible the author will write an actual retelling o I'm glad this was a novella, because it really wasn't something I would've wanted to read much longer. Happily Ever Afters is an okay read. Nothing is really bad, it just falls flat for me. I thought Sarah and Evelyn were interesting enough supporting characters in the Princess Fugitive but not enough to hold their own book.

I now definitely think they didn't need their own book. This doesn't further the story line for the entire series, and everything that happened to the girls was dull enough to have just been left to our imaginations.

They get spots in the court as implied in the last book, they each meet a guy and there's no twists, both guys turn out (view spoiler)[to be wonderful. I mean, there's a hint of suspicion from Evelyn about her guy at first, but honestly it wasn't something I caught. The guy listened to the same conversation Eve did and in my mind had just as much chance of being good like Eve as not. (hide spoiler)]

No twists on the guys, no twists on the events. The bad guy is identified almost immediately and shocker, he actually is the bad guy. He does everything that we anticipate him doing.

The climax didn't get me excited and the resolution was easy. Not to mention the (view spoiler)[bad guy got away without a hitch, with the evil item. So nothing actually got solved. I imagine he's going to take a role in book 3 so he couldn't actually be dealt with. (hide spoiler)]

So while it wasn't bad and nothing got me irritated or frustrated, it was a book that easily could've been skipped and really was just not interesting.

I'm really, absolutely, totally, completely in love with this series! Deep down, not even that well hidden but still, I'm a little princess and this series is filled with all different types of princesses and love stories. It's impossible not to connect with at least, if not more, one character and it's even more impossible to finish those books without smiling.

This book is only a novella. Therefore the love happens quite instantly, but is still just as cute and just as endearing as both the love stories in the previous books. And just like the previous two books this is not JUST a love story. It's mixed with an intriguing plot involving politics, magic, epic sword fighting and intelligent battles.

In this book we follow not one, but two girls finding their loves and battling for their kingdom. In a way they can't be more different, but in a way they're also very much alike. They're both brave, they're both fierce and they're both strong. I really enjoyed being in their heads, even though it was only relatively short and I'm glad that they too found that happily ever after!

I can't wait to read the next story in this series and to get to know our next princess longing for just a little bit of love!

I couldn't get into this, it was ridiculous to me and could have been so much better. Female guard to the queen could have been so powerful of a character but she was made to look quite unimpressive. This is the novella that should be read between books 2 and 3 in the Four Kingdom series. The novella starred Evelyn and Sarah as Snow White and Rose Red respectively. Other than the two girl's personalities, I didn't make any connections to the original tale--though admittedly, I'm not all that upset cause the original was bizarre. I very much enjoyed getting a closer look into Sarah and Evelyn's personalities and abilities. I think I liked the training grounds parts more than the social parts, but they both complemented each other and were well-balanced. The plot as a whole was a lovely little thing with appropriate sighs of contentment and gasps of intrigue. My only complaint is that one of the girl's endings was...implied. It was quite obviously so, but I had really wanted to see it through. I won't say whose and let that be a surprise. :-) I hope to see more of all these wonderful characters, but for now, on to Marie and Rumple!!! ...more

A satisfying wrap-up for two favorite characters from Book 2 in the Four Kingdoms series!

Not really a fairy-tale retelling yet well worth the read.

I loved Evelyn and Sarah in The Princess Fugitive so it was really enjoyable to read through their perspectives. (view spoiler)[The only problem I really had was that I wish this book had been longer. I only wish the romances could have been more developed. I honestly really liked Jake and thought he was cute with Evelyn but it seems like they liked each other rather quickly. And Jake's implication seemed a little out of the blue. And then Miles... Just like other books in this series, listening to the audiobook of this is a magical experience. Since this is a novella, the characters got together faster than the other books, where it takes almost all book for characters to finally admit they're in love with each other. However, I didn't really mind it.

I have to admit I didn't love Sarah's point of view, but Evelyn's point of views definitely made up for it.

First of all, I would absolutely recommend this series to any younger YA, or even middls-grader. This is a pretty excellent series for that age range and it is really satisfying my weird need to read books that give full Once Upon a Time vibes.

That being said, you know I'm a 31yo woman, well read, and well read in fantasy. This series is Weenie Hut Junior to me lol. But I'm having fun. Sometimes we all need a little Weenie Hut Junior. I guess.

This was a fantastic additional story that continued the narrative for two side characters that were introduced in book 2. Honestly princess Ava didn't do much for me, so I was really happy to find out more about her friends since they seemed much more interesting. I love a strong girl who is fighting against gender norms and aims to be a guard, with the strength and abilities from hard work to prove that she's deserved it. The plot was well written for a coup/rebellion with gossip and overhead conversations being woven in naturally. Evelyn's romance was more realistic than Sarah's it felt like, but looking back both I do identify more with Evelyn's emotional progression so I may be biased against Sarah's to begin with. Also the cover of this edition with the pink dress and the sword with the plants on the archway is just so pretty and satisfying. Kuddos to the cover designer. I'm a big fan of best friends finding love simultaneously. Also the grumpy/sunshine dynamic in friends instead of lovers is fun.

To be honest, I have NO IDEA what Snow White and Rose Red is about but I enjoyes this nonetheless.

The writing was fine. It was hard to link the story of Snow White and Rose Red to this book. Ava and her story was very prominent .This was too much a romance without the story grit from previous two books contained.

Happily Ever Afters was a cute novella set in Cellier's Four Kingdoms series that takes place immediately after The Princess Fugitive in order to develop the stories of two secondary characters from that novel, Sarah and Evelyn, and to allow them to achieve their own happily ever after. It not only explored these previous secondary characters' personalities and abilities but also served as an extended epilogue of The Princess Fugitive; I particularly enjoyed seeing a glimpse of Ava and Hans in their married life.

The perspective alternated between Sarah and Evelyn so we got to experience both the social life at Court and the training grounds for an Imperial Guard, and both storylines and protagonists were well-balanced and complemented one another. While I enjoyed Sarah's perspective and personality more, I found myself more interested in Evelyn's storyline and romantic relationship.

While overall the book was a satisfactory length and the story felt complete, I wish the story could have been a little bit longer in order to deepen the romantic development of both girls' stories and also include more of the fairy tale this was supposedly based on, "Snow White and Rose Red," because I didn't notice any elements from the tale, which was disappointing. The intrigue was also rather light and the villain obvious and unresolved, but in this case, I didn't mind as I prefer my books to be less action based and more focused on the relationships, which is what occurred here.

Overall, Happily Ever Afters was a cute, short read featuring two fun characters. I enjoyed both of their stories, development, and romances. The story was also a perfect set up for the third book in the series and I'm excited to continue reading these clever interconnected fairy tale retellings to see what happens next.

So I usually get novellas in series and read them...sometimes. They are always disappointingly short, and although they give delicious insight into a beloved character, it always seems like it was produced from author's notes, or like deleted scenes rom a movie that you enjoy clicking through. Yes, this story is about some side characters in the main series, but beloved ones who are unsurprisingly story-worthy as well. Disappointing

Happily Ever Afters wasn't quite as good as they other books in their series. Although they characters were strong, they plot left much to be desired. There should have been more foreshadowing given that They story is much longer. They repeated sword fights got old. They enchanted ring could have a personality or something to make them plot more original. Too many elements were inappropriate for their era or just didn't make sense.

Meh, just not particularly great. Not a great sense of development, I didn't connect to the characters involved -- in this case, the characters weren't main character material. They were great secondary characters, but not all secondary characters make for great feature attractions, and this is one of those cases. Sarah and Evelyn should have stayed solidly background characters. Neither of them needed to have their own story written about them. Meh, just not particularly great. Short, but so fun! I wish I had realized and read them in order from the beginning but I was in too much of a hurry to double check and once I started the book I couldn't bring myself to stop and read a different one. Anyhow. Sarah and Evelyn were fabulous in Ava's story and I'm so excited we get to see more of them! It was another adventure with a double hea.

"Oh, really," I said, pushing myself to my feet. "I thought it was because you couldn't get rid of me." "Well, that, too," she said with an impish grin. She groaned as she scrambled to her feet. "One thing's clear at least. I'm going to have to go a little easier on all those refreshments at the balls and afternoon teas and soirees. I think they're starting to take their toll." "Very true," I said, my face serious. "I'd been meaning to say something…" She shot me a worried look, and I couldn't help grinning. "But I figured you'd notice yourself seeing as how you've started having to turn sideways to fit through doors." She took a swipe at me, but I stepped deftly out of her way. "See?" I said, still smiling. "You're getting slow, too." She rolled her eyes, and I ducked in close enough to whisper in her ear. "You wouldn't want to risk looking less than perfect for Miles now, would you?" She exclaimed in outrage and tried once again to catch me. I escaped her easily, and she proceeded to chase me around the fountains, much to the amusement of the children who followed behind us, shrieking encouragement to one or the other of us. I eluded her for several minutes, ducking behind fountains and jumping over benches, purely for the entertainment of our audience. She entered into the drama with equal enthusiasm, pretending to be slower than she really was. When I eventually let her catch me, we both collapsed onto a bench, laughing. "Don't think I didn't notice the blush," I whispered, too quietly for the children to hear. "I hope you're not forgetting who Miles is." I shot her a warning look, and she met my eyes, her own full of guilt. But Ava approached us before she could reply. "If you two are quite finished, we should probably get back to the castle now." I jumped to my feet, but she was smiling so I relaxed. "As you command, Your Majesty," I said, bowing low. The children laughed again, and Ava shook her head at me. We were all still smiling when we left the square. None of us were really in a hurry to get back, so we walked, leading the horses behind us. Ava and Sarah were talking idly about the court when a voice called to Ava from across the street. I turned around and sucked in a sharp breath. It was Anhalt, one arm raised in greeting and a broad smile on his face. I had just enough time to whisper his name to Ava and Sarah before he had crossed over to join us. I was careful to keep my face free of all emotion as Sarah and I dropped back to walk respectfully behind Ava and the count. Anhalt seemed delighted with our chance encounter and determined to make the most of his unexpected audience with the queen. I watched the surrounding streets with my usual vigilance while I wondered if his voice really sounded so oily, or if it was my own feelings painting my perception of them. Sarah was listening intently to their conversation, her eyes never leaving the count's form. I knew she would be paying attention for any clues, so I stopped listening myself, devoting my full attention to watching for any threat to the queen. I wasn't sure if it was this extra attentiveness or just a heightened sense of alert due to the count's presence, but I noticed an odd flicker of movement as we passed a small side alley. It was barely more than a shifting of shadow, and I could easily have missed it. Instead I tensed, my hand flying to my sword hilt. In one step, I placed myself between Ava and the alley. She turned to look at me, surprised out of her conversation by my sudden movement. I spoke to her but kept my eyes trained on the shadows. "It might be nothing, but I think it would be a good idea if we moved a bit faster, Your Majesty." — 0 likes
